We are a youth-driven, innovative organization committed to doing whatever it takes to help our youth succeed in finding and pursuing their passions to build a stronger, wealthier community. At this time, we're looking for excited individuals to fill the following positions on the Better Start Foundation Board of Directors:


  • Fundraising Chair

  • At Large Board Member

As a member of the Board of Directors of Better Start Foundation, I have a legal and ethical responsibility to ensure that the organization does the best work possible in pursuit of its goals. I support the purpose and mission of the organization and pledge my commitment to assist in carrying out its work. As a board member, I will consistently act responsibly and prudently. I understand my duties to include:


Leadership, governance and oversight

  • Serving as a trusted advisor to the CEO as he develops and implements Better Start Foundation’s strategic plan. 

  • Reviewing outcomes and metrics created by Better Start Foundation for evaluating its impact, and regularly measuring its performance and effectiveness using those metrics; reviewing agenda and supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings. 

  • Approving Better Start Foundation’s annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions; being informed of, and meeting all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities. 

  • Contributing to an annual performance evaluation of the CEO. 

  • Assisting the CEO and board chair in identifying and recruiting other Board Members. 

  • Partnering with the CEO and other board members to ensure that board resolutions are carried out.

  • Participating in fundraising activities to ensure the financial health of BSF.

  • Serving on committees or task forces and taking on special assignments. 

  • Representing Better Start Foundation to stakeholders; acting as an ambassador for the organization. 

  • Ensuring Better Start Foundation’s commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the communities Better Start Foundation serves.


Better Start Foundation Board Members will consider Better Start Foundation a philanthropic priority and make annual gifts that reflect that priority. So that Better Start Foundation can credibly solicit contributions from foundations, organizations, and individuals, Better Start Foundation is requesting to have 100 percent of Board Members make an annual contribution that is commensurate with their capacity. Better Start Foundation currently requires a monthly personal gift from every board member.

Board terms/participation

Better Start Foundation Board Members will serve a two year term to be eligible for re-appointment for one additional term. Board meetings will be held quarterly and committee meetings will be held in coordination with full board meetings.

Service on Better Start Foundation’s Board of Directors is without remuneration, except for administrative support, travel, and accommodation costs in relation to Board Members’ duties. The Board will support the work of Better Start Foundation and provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance. While day-to-day operations are led by Better Start Foundations chief executive officer (CEO), the Board-CEO relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected.
